Bridges of Madison County

During the Iowa road trip with my peoples, we visited some famous covered bridges, in Madison County.

"Madison County originally boasted 19 covered bridges, but just six remain today, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridges were covered by order of the County Board of Supervisors to help preserve the large flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof. Usually, the bridges were named for the resident who lived closest."

The bridge did have a very solid , sturdy floor.

It wasn't as scary to walk across, as I had first expected it to be.

It was a nice place to sit and relax a bit after a day of shopping....

and do a little exploring too!!

  1. wow that is so neat! I have always wanted to visit the Bridges! There is a really good book too, DollaMan, titled "The Bridges of Madison County" by Robert James Waller, and it was made into a movie as well!
